## The selection of statistical parameters of measurement signals in the process of a rail vehicle suspension condition assessment

### Rafał Melnik

#### Abstract

The main objective of the work was development of the method of rail vehicle suspension condition assessment. The method, dedicated to the monitoring system, is based on the analysis of acceleration signals obtained from selected points of the vehicle. The study presented in the work covers numerical research, experimental tests performed on real objects and statistical analysis of the obtained results. The numerical research was performed in MSC.ADAMS simulation package with use of dedicated railway VI-Rail software. The faults of primary suspension spring and secondary suspension damper were modeled as a reduction of stiffness and damping coefficients with respect to the values of the nominal model (undamaged). The simulation results indicated that suspension damages has substantial influence on the acceleration signals amplitudes. On the basis of the simulation results, the set of statistical parameters, which values are sensitive to suspension damages, was selected. The experiment with use of real wagons was performed on a test track in Żmigród. The suspension damages implemented in the wagons corresponded to the numerically researched faults. The reduction of stiffness in the goods wagon was implemented by demounting of one coaxial spring packet of primary suspension. In case of the passenger wagon, the reduction of damping was managed by disconnection one secondary suspension damper. Analysis of the experimental results was carried out by means of the proposed method. The obtained values of selected parameters are coordinates in three-dimensional diagnostic space. The limit values – the distance value measured from the point corresponding to current state to the reference point (for undamaged vehicle) were followed by statistical analysis. The exceedance of the measure is a diagnostic symptom indicating suspension fault.
