## The methodology for area calculation of geodesic polygons in the application of equal-area map projections

#### Abstract

The doctoral dissertation presents the problems related to the calculation of the area of geodesic polygons on an ellipsoid. The study discusses existing methods of calculation of these areas and presents the Author's concept of a solution of this problem, consisting in the application of equal-area map projections. The conducted works encompassed an analysis of the distortions in selected equalarea map projections for several sample areas and of the influence of such distortions on the area of reduction equivalents of geodesic polygons. Moreover, a method of the calculation of the areas of images of geodesic polygons was developed. Basing on the conducted works, an algorithm was created, followed by the development of computer software. Test calculations were also conducted on selected objects, allowing the author to determine a series of guidelines concerning the possibility of application of the proposed method to calculate the area of geodesic polygons. Finally, the method developed by the author was compared with other methods discussed in the study. The comparison takes into account the calculation results and the complexity of algorithms.
