The choice of airport infrastructure for handling urban area in the European context

Dominika Szterk

Abstract

The main growth factor for Polish airports is economic development and coordination of economy with European Union partners. The growth of air transport in Poland follows from social and cultural needs. It allows for transfer of people and cargo far distances in a quick time. The necessity of the already existing airports extension in Poland and new airports planned investments indicates reliable analysis of their operational infrastructure. In this case the analysis of airport infrastructure is very helpful in the context of European Union support urban agglomerations. This work takes into account the environment aspects (mainly emission of noise coming out from the aircraft) and communications issues between airport and urban area. The airport handles aircraft movements including landing and take off, passenger traffic flow (departing, arriving and transit transfer). The main purpose of the airport is to handle both topics safely, quickly and inexpensively. Adjusting between capacity of particular elements, their infrastructure and demand for transport service is a fundamental key in proper airport functioning. This work could be useful through better improvement, coordination and reasonable usage of the existing and new polish airport infrastructure. In the respect and based on European Union the usage of modified multi-criteria methods allows to set up the polish airports balanced development model solutions. The study included a group of 119 arbitrarily chosen airports (based on the criteria of data availability and being located in a fairly representative group of European agglomerations). The analysis of European airports characteristics allowed for the airport development trends determination, as well as the generalization of airport operational adjusting infrastructure methods to the needs of an agglomeration.
