#### Abstract

The present paper deals with the problem, not raised until now, of reliability evaluation of open cooling system in conventional power plants, such as, for example, the Połaniec Power Plant. The main objectives of the present study were developing a model of reliability of open cooling system enabling forecasting reliability assessment of system functioning. By this way a set of necessary indicators elements of cooling system was estimated and an income of exploitation select parameters was assessed to the reliability of this system. An analysis of power plant cooling systems in Poland and the world was made. From said analysis it appears, that in Poland the type of cooling system used is closely related to the type of fuel used in power stations and existing water resources in the region. However, there is a completely different situation in France, China, Germany and the UK, where due to the favourable location of fossil fuels in relation to water resources, this problem does not exist. Within the scope of said study a cause and effect analysis of failures was performed using the novel analysis method of the random events being based on log - linear analysis. This method allowed to the statement that important relationship (interaction) failure frequency exist with element type (R1-R8), type of damage (U-W), occurrence time (Z-L), and position of the element in the cooling system (C1-C2). Developed model cooling system reliability (taking into account the dependence events) uses elements of the Bayes’ theorem, the biggest advantage of which is possibility of comparison between the a priori before research and the information a posteriori obtained from said research. In case of the present study it enabled the verification of the adopted thesis of the paper on existence of the impact of hydrological and quality conditions in the water source on the reliability of the cooling system, and applied mathematical apparatus as well as properties of Bayes’ assumptions enabled for good representation of the system under study, without causing any complication of calculations at the same time. Said model enabled to evaluate the reliability of cooling system in two states complementing each other, i.e. in the state of the full availability (guarantees full installed capacity of the power station to be obtained) and in the state of full or partial availability (guarantees at least 70% of installed capacity of the power station to be obtained). The results of performed calculations show obvious conclusion, that the reliability of the cooling system in the state of the full or partial availability is much higher than the reliability of this system in the situation, when it is supposed to provide the maximum productivity of power units. It is related with, that in case of full or partial availability one can take into consideration less demanding hydrological conditions in the water source, and in the same time a considerable reserve arises in many subsystems, which affects the increase of the cooling system reliability. Presented in the study the methodology was applied for the first time in research on the reliability of cooling system in power engineering.
