Hydrodynamics properties of hydrocephalus shunts

Abstract

The thesis concerns hydrodynamic properties of hydrocephalus shunts. The general aim can be formulated as an improvement in management of hydrocephalus trough: • Defining and description of major hydrodynamic properties of hydrocephalus shunts " ...,.-,, • Assessment of these properties in most common constructions • Design of the methods for assessments of shunt functioning after implantation • Refining of criteria for the shunt placement through assessment of autoregulation of cerebral blood flow Obtained results permitted the following conclusions: 1. Not all parameters and properties of the shunt arc sufficiently descroibed by the manufacturer. Independent testsing is an important factor in better understanding of indications for shunting. 2. The method for shunt assessment in-vivo has been proposed and verfied 3. An importance of the complex asessment of cerebrospinal fluid circulation has been clinically documented.
