Influence of uncertainties on safety parameters of nuclear reactor

Abstract

The work focused on the safety of nuc1ear reactors in general; MARIA research reactor has been taken as an example of this study. The operating parameters ofthe reactor core are subject to uncertainties either these uncertainty are a dynamical one (fluctuation of coolant flow rate or power pertubation) or static one ( geometry of the fuel, fuel content, fuel distribution). The influence of these uncertainties on the nuc1ear reactor safety is a crucial issue. Above certain magnitude of heat flux and exceeding a certain limit of temperature the c1ad of fusel element (which plays as a first barrier to release to radioactive materials) is damaged. The maximum c1ad temperature and maximum heat flux are the most important safety parameters, these two parameters are not measured rather they are calculated, their calculations are based on the operating parameters which are subject to uncertainties. Investigating the impact of the uncertainties on reactor safety parameters is the task of this work. The results of this work show that the impact due to static uncertainty is dominating compared to the dynamical one.
