## A comparison of gas turbine performance characteristics between closed and open cycles

#### Abstract

Power Generation needs to meet great challenges due to more and more stringent legisla-tion in terms of emissions. Discussion about global warming and the necessity of apply-ing CCS systems (Carbon Capture and Storage) implies serious limitations to current conventional technologies. Existing coal plants will have to use CCS systems in the near future, what will make them more expensive and less efficient. Hence, there are chances for development and deployment of new alternative technologies. One of these technolo-gies are closed cycles of gas turbines. Current work is focused on closed gas turbine cycles, which are being considered as one of the options for IV Generation nuclear reactors. Additionally, analysis and comparison with open gas turbine cycle is made. The work, which has been done is concerned about the cycles, which have been investi-gated the most for the last 10 years and there is a greatest chance for deployment of these systems- based on helium and carbon dioxide. In order to run the performance simulation of the cycles, computational model had been built, which was implemented by using For-tran 90 language. The main parameters of the system have been investigated such as: pressure ratio, inlet temperature and pressure, Turbine Entry Temperature and efficiencies of the main components. It allowed to find optimum conditions for design point opera-tion. The analysis revealed that helium cycle with intercooler achieves the highest level of thermal efficiency- 44.62% for relatively conservative assumptions. The alternative solu-tion seems to be carbon dioxide cycle, which can achieve comparable level of thermal efficiency with lower highest cycle temperature. Open cycle, although quite high effi-ciency is obtained, has low energy density and hence, high capital costs
