## The study of nansteady-state aerosol filtration in fibrous filters

#### Abstract

This thesis concerning nonsteady – state aerosol filtration in fibrous filters. The main purpose of this study was to check the influence of the filter structure on the aerosol particles’ deposition rate depending on the dust concentration and aerosol velocity. This work is divided into six chapters: the first defines aims and scope of the thesis, the second contains a review of a literature, the third presents experimental results, the fourth – summary and conclusions. The fifth is a list of symbols and the sixth – bibliography. The literature review includes definition, classification and influence of aerosols on human health (chapter 2.1.), description of filtration in fibrous filters process (chapter 2.2.) and characterization of mechanisms of particles’ deposition on fibrous filter (chapter 2.3.). The third chapter presents results of experimental studies, which contain precise structural characteristics of four polypropylene fibrous filters (thickness, porosity, surface density and fiber size distribution) (chapter 3.1.); the experimental setup (chapter 3.2.) and the methodology of research (chapter 3.3.). In the subsection 3.4., the initial pressure drop depending on the superficial air velocity and the initial efficiency depending on the particle diameter as well as the changes of these parameters in time during filter loading under various process conditions were presented. The experimental data of the pressure drop and overall mass efficiency for four tested filters were interpreted using simple correlations. The very good agreement was obtained in each case. On the basis of the extensive studies, it can be concluded that the efficiency of filters having the thinnest fibers and being the most porous was the highest comparing to the filters with thickest fibers. It was observed that with the increase of particle diameter the efficiency of dust removal increases. The measurements were performed for different polypropylene fibrous media under various process conditions, i.e., inlet aerosol concentration and aerosol velocity. For the lower aerosol velocity the lower value of the pressure drop and the higher efficiency were observed. Comparing different aerosol concentrations faster growth of the pressure drop and filter efficiency in time were registered for higher one.
