Emergency operating conditions of BWR power plants

Abstract

In my work I explain procedures used during emergencies in BWR power plants including norms and safety guidelines. The document consists of seven chapters. In the first chapter I explain the goal of my masters work- showing the influence of the reactors emergency work on the power plants work(BWR type). The second part is the opening, showing the historical view and explaining the state of modern nuclear power plant industry. The full description of a nuclear power plant is located in the third chapter. This part has basic information on the BWR power plant: its design, working conditions and the specification of different ways of power regulation(eg. using regulating rods or circulation pumps). In the forth chapter conditions and safety norms are explained, that concern exploitation of nuclear power plants(BWR type), mainly the principle of “into the deep” defense, the one-time nonworking rule and the types of barriers used. The following topic explains the International Nuclear Event Scale(INES). The description of nuclear reactor accidents of the BWR type are shown in the fifth chapter. In this part detailed information concerning the incidents in Fukushima and Brows Ferry are brought to light. The main part is included in the sixth chapter. It shows computer simulations made using “Boiling Water Reactor Simulator with Active Safety Systems” program. Two chosen simulations are explained in detail: the failure of steam piping inside the reactors safety cover and the loss of cooling water inside the reactors cover. A brief explanation of the simulation software is also included in this chapter. The seventh part describes conclusions derived from the simulations and the failures occurring in Fukushima and Brows Ferry. In addition, an annex describing the BWR parameters is included. The same parameters were used in the simulation.
