## Corrosion resistance of an austenitic stainless steel processed by hydrostatic extrusion

#### Abstract

In the present study, the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel before the hydrostatic extrusion (HE) process and after different degree of deformation was investigated. The microstructure analysis show, that the hydrostatic extrusion process produced grain refinement and reduces the size of inclusions. The study was performed on the longitudinal and cross section with regard to the extrusion direction. The passivation behaviour of 316L steel was studied by potencjodynamic and cyclic voltammetry. The resistance to localized corrosion of passive film formed on austenitic stainless steel in the as-received state and after hydrostatic extrusion was investigated by anodic polarization in a borate buffer solution containing Cl- ions. The light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the morphology of the corrosion attack. The electrochemical tests in sulphuric acid, borate buffer and sodium hydroxide show that the current density in the passive domain increased with strain induced during the HE process which indicates slightly lower passive film stability. The presence of Cl- ions in the solution induces the localized attack. The materials after HE process show higher pitting potentials than as-received state, which indicates higher resistance for localized corrosion.
