## Aerosol filtration on metal wire mesh filters

#### Abstract

Metal filters have many advantages, therefore, the range of their applications increases. They are resistant to mechanical wear and can be used to work in harsh environments under high temperatures and pressures. Because of the numerous benefits they are used in many industries (for example motor industry, building industry, agricultural industry or chemical industry), for the initial air purification in ventilation and air conditioning systems and also for the fat particles and vapors of oil mist capturing in kitchen hoods. The aim of this study was to examine the aerosol particles filtration on metal filters. It was verified, whether, the covering filters with a thin layer of oil can increase their effectiveness. An attempt was made to regenerate the loaded with solid particles metal filters in two different ways. The theoretical part of the thesis describes aerosols, metal filters, as well as mechanisms of aerosol particles and their rebound from the surface of the metal fiber. The experimental part begins with presentation of the apparatus and the dust which have been used in this study. Afterwards, two commercially available filters’ structures were presented. Their behavior was tested very carefully. The initial efficiency, the initial pressure drop and the changes in these two key parameters during filtration process were determined. Measurements were carried out for two superficial aerosol velocities of v = 0,1 [m/s] and v = 0,2 [m/s]. The images of laden with dust filters were made using scanning electron microscope (SEM) to see in which parts of the filter structure the deposition of aerosol particles mainly occurs. The experiments for filters covered with silicon oil were made to decrease the particles rebound effect and thus to increase the filter efficiency. The possibility of regeneration of metal wire filters was examined utilizing two methods: the first one by reversible airflow and cleaning filters and the second one by washing the filters using water with detergent. The experimental data of filter efficiency were compared with the results obtained by the classical theory of filtration. The results obtained shows that the observed phenomenon of larger particles’ rebound from the metal fiber surface, which is stronger for higher aerosol velocity and decrease the effectiveness of the filtration, can be reduced by covering the surface of the filter with thin layer of oily substance. It was demonstrated that the metal filters can be easily regenerated.
