Architectural envelope solutions, Designing in the context of Urban Calcutta

Unmilan Ghosh

The architectural envelope today is progressively replacing the classical con¬cepts of wall and roof. Mediating between the exterior and the interior space is a chal¬lenging yet delicate task entrusted to the architectural envelope. Designing sophistic¬ated yet customized architectural envelopes are seldom the case, and often a similar solution is implemented in a starkly contrasting context and environment. The research aims to understand the hard facts and often delicate cultural nuances which shape building envelopes. As a part of the project, contemporary and relevant facade systems and building envelopes will be analysed with parametric tools, in search for a contex¬tual solution, drawing from lessons in vernacular architecture.
