## Complexing organic corrosion inhibitors and metal extractants - selected o-aminometylene derivatives of alkylphenols and related substances: synthesis and study of their practical uses

#### Abstract

The application of organic compounds complexing metals is of growing importance at present time. They are applied, inter alia, in preventing corrosion of steel, recovery of valuable metals from their ores or waste water solutions, as well as in chemical catalysis. Studies on the synthesis and potential applications for a group of compounds with such properties conducted by me, in course of Masters thesis at the Laboratory of Technological Processes Warsaw University of Technology, should be a contribution to this growing field of applied chemistry. The literature review focuses on characterizing the main methods of benzylamine synthesis and on a review of methods of the synthesis of metal complexes with derivatives of alkylphenols. The aim of the studies was to identify the methodology of extraction of metal ions by using organic solutions of complexing compounds. The purpose of experimental studies was a synthesis of selected complexing compounds of alkylphenols derivatives and the study of ion extraction of copper (II) from aqueous solutions using obtained compounds. I also conducted several experiments aimed at creating new complexes of copper (II). For the synthesis of complexing derivatives of alkylphenols I applied an innovative method developed at the LPT. In this method corresponding triazines (N-metylenealkyloamines trimers) are synthesized and isolated and then used as substrates for the synthesis of certain derivatives of alkylphenols. Laboratory work resulted in, among other, synthesis of thirteen different complexing compounds - derivatives of alkylphenols with a yield of 13-84%. Eight compounds belong to the group of benzylamines, two to bisphenols, two to 2hydroksyoksimes and one is a tetrahydrosalene. Three of benzylamines from the abovementioned group were obtained for the first time. I selected eight of the obtained compounds and tested their ability to extract copper (II) ions from aqueous solutions. Extractions were carried out in two ranges of pH: 1.5 - 5.5 and 10.0 - 11.5. These studies confirmed that the compounds of the beforementioned groups are capable of copper extraction. Tests have shown that the yield of extraction of copper ions (II) by solution of benzylamine in chloroform varries depending on the pH of the aqueous phase, with effective extraction possible only from solutions with pH above 10.0. One of the obtained benzylamines, which has an aromatic ring with an amino group, has failed as a copper extractant over studied pH range. The last stage of the work was the synthesis and separation of coordination complexes of copper and the selected alkylphenols derivatives. Four such complexes in crystalline form, have been received. Produced complexing compounds are substrates for further work, conducted at the LPT, on the synthesis of new metal complexes and their practical application and the results of research - material for publication.
