Technological properties of ceramic slurries and ceramic shell moulds built on corundum filler and aqua binder based on nano aluminum oxides

Abstract

Ceramic moulds are widely used in the investment casting processes to obtain geometrically complicated nickel superalloy turbine parts, which are often critical for safe operation aircraft jet engines. Up to now such moulds are built of a slurry consisting of three types of components: - nano colloidal binders; - refractory fillers; - additives (e.g. polymers, wetting agent etc.) with colloidal silica as a binder. However SiO2 may react with highly reactive components of the alloy, e.g. Hf leading to oxidation, and in the consequence to deteriorate the mechanical properties of superalloys. The results obtain in this thesis show that SiO2 can be replaced by nano Al2O3 based binder which does not react with the superalloy components. Properties of 18 various ceramic slurries built on such a binder based on nano alumina and corundum filler were investigated. Out of these 18 two ceramic slurries were selected and tested by building ceramic shell mould. Properties of thus fabricated moulds were composed with standard ceramic shell moulds built with a binder based on silica oxide.
