The influence of the low temperature plasma nitriding and carbonitriding process on the structure and properties of steel AISI 420 F (3H13)

Abstract

The study presents investigation of influence of low temperature nitriding and carbonitriding under glow discharge conditions, for chemical and mechanical properties of 420F steel. In initial conditions material has ferritic or martensitic structure. For characterize contents of phase composition after processes, X-ray diffraction measurements were perform. Obtain results shown new phases: Fe4N, Fe2,5N and CrN, which have strongly influence on materials properties. Corrosion resistance in 0.5M NaCl and Ringer solution were estimated by potentiodynamic method. Best properties in those environment has steel after glow discharge nitriding process. Mechanical features of layers were define using microhardness test. In this case also martensitic steel with nitride layer have highest results. In paper are also presents friction toughness of fabricated layers, measured by T-04 test. The obtained results can be basis of further researches for possibility to apply 420F steel after surface treatment in medical materials.
