Project of reinforcements of the existing steel construction of a skyligth over the Main Hall of Warsaw University of Technology Main Building

Abstract

The purpose of present study are the calculations of the steel construction of the skylight over the Main Hall of Warsaw University of Technology Main building, which were conducted basing on present European standards. Additionally the reinforcements were proposed in cases where bearing capacity was found not to be sufficient. Whole skylight construction consists of the steel construction, the glazed upper part and suspended unique glass ceiling in shape of symmetric pentagon. The sashes supporting glazed part are the first structure taking over the external loads. They are then transferred to the channel purlins, and then to the two kinds of rafters: extreme in the form of channel bars and rest designed as trusses. The main structure consist of truss elements: 4 girders and 6 suspended to them joists, which not only carries the load, bud additionally stiffens the structure of the whole construction. There are 2 kinds of girders: the main pitched girder of span of 33 meters, and suspended to them supporting girders of span of almost 16 meters. The great majority of the beams were made of brackets with the offset between them equal to the gusset plate thickness. The whole structure is very differentiated – in the construction more than 30 unique profiles. The joint connections are made with gusset plates and rivets. Basing on the cataloguing made for the 1990s the three dimension model has been made in the Robot Structural Analysis program. The results from this model were used for the calculations of the Ultimate Limit State and Serviceability Limit State conditions. For the bars that didn’t fulfil the requirements the reinforcements of the profile has been proposed and those elements were recalculated.
