## Conceptional design of retractable propulsion for Jantar 2B glider

#### Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to prepare a conceptional design of additional propulsion for SZD 42-2 Jantar 2B glider. One of basic assumptions for the project was a possibility of using it to convert existing Jantar 2B into a motor glider in the future. That forced such attitude to a project so that it could be accepted for realization by ULC. It meant usage of certified components, assurance of safe usage and safety of pilot during an accident. The thesis presents a project of a propulsion for self launch sailplane which has a possibility to fold completely into inside of fuselage of a glider. At a beginning of thesis, after considering few possibilities, a kinematics of a mechanism retracting a propulsion was designed. Next step was to design individual elements of retractable propulsion system. Certified SOLO 2625 engine is a basis of designed system. It has been mounted to steel frame that has possibility to rotate. The frame is connected to a fuselage with a pivots. A composite jib, on top of which, elements of belt transmission are located, is attached to a frame. By means of that transmission a drive from engine is transferred to a 1.6m in diameter propeller. The mechanism of retraction is powered with electrical linear screw actuator produced by Warner Linear company. A durability of fuselage after mounting a propulsion was gained by designing additional composite reinforcements installed inside of the fuselage in place where the hole in glider was made. Apart of that, few other very important for the conversion structural problems has been solved in a project. There were also problems such as engine vibrations damping, running and tightening of toothed belt of transmission and its’ protection from air streams, concentrated force into composite structures application points, a stay – a steel wire protecting pilot from being hit by elements of propulsion during an accident. Whole of design work was made using NX4 software produced by UGS. In that software a 3D model of fragment of fuselage of Jantar 2B glider and whole elements of propulsion system has been drawn. After that glider and propulsion have been assembled into one model in software environment. On the basis of that model correctness of design and working of propulsion retracting system have been check. Effects of design work has been shown in thesis on drawings. In thesis none of calculation work (durability, belt transmission, detailed project of propeller, predicted performance of new built motor glider) has been solved. Those problems might be solved in another thesis.
