## Assessment of adhesion between repair systems and the concrete surface using the ultrasonic pulse echo method

#### Abstract

Bond quality is the main feature of repair systems necessary to be assessed. It is due to the fact, that the proper level of adhesion between coating materials and concrete substrates is treated as a direct indicator of repair efficiency and quality. The pull-off test is the most commonly used for adhesion assessment in repair systems but growing interest in nondestructive techniques is concrete diagnosis is recently noted. In this work the possibility of using ultrasonic pulse echo method for assessment adhesion between repair material and concrete substrates was analyzed. An investigation were carried out for two group of coatings: polymer (PC) and polymer-cement (PCC). The bond strength was tested with the pull-off method. Evaluation of the adhesion between this kind of coatings and concrete substrate was conducted using parameters characterizing the ultrasonic signal amplitude obtained by means of the analysis of the Root Mean Square (RMS) value and maximum of RMS. A relationship between the pull-off strength and RMS was analyzed. Taking into account all analysis conducted in this work the general conclusions can be formulated that the RMS value and max RMS value are not a parameters that can be used to estimate the adhesion of PC and PCC coatings to the concrete substrate and ultrasound pulse echo technique is not useful for assessment of adhesion in so difficult object like concrete repair systems
