Mathematical model and simulations of a feed water heater

Abstract

The main purpose of the thesis was to create a mathematical model for a feed water heater and to make simulations connected with changes of input parameters. Regenerative feed water heating is a method of raising the efficiency of power generation in power units, therefore it is crucial to properly select the exchanger for a given technological system. Thanks to the mathematical model, it is possible to check how the excitations of the system affect the thermodynamic parameters of the factors and monitor the quantities that cannot be measured due to design reasons. In addition, the creation of a computer program with low computational complexity, based on the equations describing the model for a feed water heater, simplifies and shorten the time of process of designing, creating simulations and allows the reading of non-measured quantities practically in real time. In the first part of the thesis, two types of heat exchangers installed in modern power plants and heat power stations were reviewed. The construction and operation principle of the mixing exchanger as well as examples of constructional solutions have been presented. In the case of a shell and tube exchanger, a detailed description of individual components was made, the principle of operation was clarified and various technological solutions obtaining the highest efficiency of the described device were characterized. The topic on the arrangement of pipes and baffles in the exchanger as well as their geometry was explored. The differences between the one-zone and three-zone exchangers were illustrated. In addition, the criteria for selecting the type and number of exchangers in power units were provided. There were also shown the advantages and disadvantages of both construction solutions. The second part of the thesis consists of the mathematical model for a feed water heater. Assumptions of the model with their justification and equations describing the phenomena occurring in the exchanger were presented. A detailed method for calculating the velocity of fluids and heat transfer coefficients were presented. The fundamental part of the thesis was the implementation of these equations using programming language in the MATLAB environment. The block diagram of the created algorithm and an example of calculation results illustrated by the temperature distribution of heating steam and feed water in the exchanger were presented. Consideration was also given to the accuracy of the model and the results were compared with real data. The culmination of the thesis was to conduct computer simulations using the program created by the author. The influence of the input parameters on output parameters has been presented in the form of graphs. An analysis of the results achieved and their physical interpretation was carried out
