## Simulation tests of aerodynamics of passenger car segment A

### Maksymilian Tomasz Świerkowski

#### Abstract

The diploma thesis concerns the simulation tests of the aerodynamics of the passenger car segment A. These studies focused on the analysis of the distribution of air streams before and after attaching the rear aerodynamic spoiler to the body of the vehicle. For testing purposes, different angles of inclination of the used spoiler were adopted. Chapter 1 contains an introduction to the basic theoretical issues related to vehicle aerodynamics. The issues include: Bernoulli's equation, aerodynamic forces and moments affecting the moving vehicle and the drag coefficient. Chapter 2 presents the division of cars due to market segments, types of bodies used in the production of passenger cars and the impact related to the shape of the body on the aerodynamics of the vehicle. Chapter 3 discusses the software that has been used to carry out simulation tests. The model of the tested passenger car was presented in the mentioned chapter. In order to become familiar with the body of the vehicle, the values of the inclination angles of its individual elements were measured. In order to carry out the research it was necessary to create a finite element mesh for the considered passenger car model - Chapter 4. In the mentioned chapter, the quality conditions for the constructed mesh and the area in which the simulation took place were also introduced. Simulation tests refer to the obtained values of drag coefficients of the car body, pressure maps regarding the vehicle body and air flow patterns behind the vehicle. The annex presents simulation tests for all given angles of the spoiler's inclination. Among them are the distributions of: the particle velocity of the air streams, the particle velocity vectors, the speed of the particles for the planes cutting the body at specific distances from the ground and the trajectory of the stream particles behind the vehicle body.
