## Laboratory stand for fluxgate liquid level measurement

### Kamil Krzysztof Sowiński

#### Abstract

The purpose of the following thesis was to design and implement a laboratory stand for fluxgate liquid level measurement in a tank. The work consists of three basic parts. The first part focuses on the presentation of existing technical solutions on the market, used in measuring the liquid level in the tank. The principle of operation of magnetic amplifiers on which the concept of fluxgate is based, which in the further part of the work was used as the basis of the measurement, was also described. In addition, mention is made of bandpass voltage filters that have found their application in the voltage signal analysis system. The second part concentrates on the development of the concept and construction of complete measuring device. It has been divided into three subsections. First of all, it describes the construction of a mechanical system consisting of two coils - a measurement and a supply, and a float with a magnet, mounted on a tube, inside which the amorphous tape core is placed. Moreover, the new-created system was analysed to determine the parameters best describing the physical phenomenon occurring, to unambiguously determine the position of the float in relation to the measuring coil, which in turn allows to measure the height of the liquid column in the tank. The third subchapter describes the construction of electronic circuits included in the measurement station - a function generator was created that allows to generate a sinusoidal signal, with adjustable amplitude and frequency, which, when connected to a current converter, allows powering the appropriate coil. An appropriate signal analysis module was also constructed. The mentioned module consists of a two-stage bandpass filter, signal amplifier, rectifier, analogue-digital converter and microcontroller. In addition, a user-friendly way of presenting the measurement results was ensured by connecting a four-segment display to the microcontroller, which shows the height of the liquid level in the tank, expressed in centimeters. The finished electronics are enclosed in a casing, modified with appropriate connectors and terminals used for connecting the coils, power supply and USB port, allowing communication with the computer. The third part of the work presents the analysis of measurement uncertainty of the constructed level meter. For this purpose, ten measurements were made on fifteen points, uniformly covering the measuring range of the device. Plotted error characteristics of the laboratory stand, depending on the height of the liquid column, on which the relative error of indications, uncertainty of calibration and the spread of results were taken into account. The analysis allowed to determine in what range the measurement error related to the measured value falls and what is the repeatability of measurements. The work is finished with a chapter containing a summary and conclusions related to the implementation of the task set before the author. In the further part of the work there is a bibliography containing sources of information to which one was referring during its writing. At the end, there are attachments, containing a list of detailed research results, which, due to the care for the aesthetics of work, were not in its essential part.
