## Research and simulation of the process of grinding the granite block In order to choose the width of the punches

#### Abstract

In this master thesis there was analyzed the process of compressing a block of rock by coaxial flat punches. The crushing process was performed by using three different widths of punches (2a = 2, 4 and 8 [mm]). The results showed that the width of the punch has an impact on the parameters of crushing process: the crushing operation, strength and failure mechanisms. The study was conducted on the stone blocks of granite. In this paper is also presented an influence of the length of the sample on the parameters of the grinding process. Six samples were analyzed. Their width were as follow: 2s = 500, 250, 124, 64; 32 and 16 [mm]. The tested material proved high variability of the strength parameters of compressed blocks. Another purpose of this paper was to simulate the process of compressing a block of rock, considered as a homogeneous substance (elastic model of the body, plane strain), by two flat punches. This issue imitates squeezing of the lumps in the workspace of some crushers. That’s why the results of relevant studies can be used to solve technical problems. The assumption was made that the process is conducted under the flat state of deformation. Solutions were obtained using the finite element method (FEM), which allowed to describe not only the strength but also the energy of crushing. Preliminary studies on granite have shown good agreement of theoretical and experimental results.
