## The comparison of risk and reliability of modern fighter jets

### Zaher Mahmoud Mohamed Zaher Omar

#### Abstract

The intention of the following detailed Bachelor’s thesis is to determine the reliability of three of the most anticipated military combat aircrafts in the world, and the risks that they possess. This was achieved by analysing not only the risk and reliability, but also the probability and hazard levels of the combat aircrafts. Moreover, these aircrafts are somewhat similar in terms of function and status but belong to different generations and companies. These companies are some of the biggest aerospace defense companies in the world and have contributed heavily in the safety and freedom of many countries around the world. They are, McDonnel Douglas, General Dynamics, and Lockheed Martin. This thesis is basically split into three chapters. The first chapter is an introduction of the combat aircrafts that are considered, their specifications, operators, and models. This is done because it is vital to understand the nature of these combat aircrafts before a full analysis can be done. The second part is basically comprised of the stages of flight of the combat aircrafts and the undesirable events that may possibly happen. An undesirable event is basically an event or situation that happens on the course of a combat aircraft that leads to an incident or accident. This may happen due to several factors, such as a mid-air collision or pilot error or other factors that will be discussed later. Said incident or accident can be either minor or major, depending on the category of loss. The category of loss is an important classification of level of seriousness or severity of an accident. And this is accounted for, both in terms of damage done to the combat aircraft, and damage done to the pilot. To proceed to the final chapter and goal of this thesis, one must be familiarized with this subchapter of the thesis. The last and final chapter of this thesis is where the calculations and tables are shown. This is essential in order to fully comprehend the potential of these combat aircrafts. By consolidating the knowledge and research from the previous chapters of the thesis - the risk, reliability, probability, and hazard levels of the aircrafts were done, and the appropriate conclusions were made with reference to the results that were obtained. All the aircraft data obtained is from external sources, however, it is important to mention that not all accidents have been recorded, due to some data being classified by certain operating governments, such as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for example. This is natural and expected because of diplomatic purposes and protocols. Fortunately, the data provided by the United States Air Force is accurate enough to be scaled and approximated respectively towards other operating governments, since the accurate number of aircraft units purchased is known
