Recovery system project for the "CanSat Launcher" rocket

Jan Piotr Kierski

Abstract

The main goal of the Rocket Section, designated a few months ago, is the organization of the first polish CanSats’ competition, directed to science enthusiasts, college and university students and to scientists. To achieve this goal, a new “CanSat Launcher” rocket is designed, based on the previous constructions of the Rocket Section. The topic of this engineer’s diploma thesis is the recovery system project, being a part of this rocket. The main function of the recovery system is to assure a safe landing of the rocket, after it has realized its mission. Because of the possessed know-how, technological possibilities and other limitations a decision was made to use a parachute recovery system. In the chapter 3 are described the existing design solutions, frequently used in the parachute recovery systems. Each of them has been analyzed in order to be utilized in the “CanSat Launcher” rocket. The analysis contains the parachute opening moment, the parachute system location in the rocket, the extraction mode and the parachutes quantity and shapes. Basing on the chosen solutions, a mission profile and the parachute deployment sequences has been created. In the chapter 4, all the parts of the recovery system project are presented: the main and the drogue parachutes, the engine separation module, the deployment bags, the parachutes mount and extraction mechanisms, the parachutes compartment and the external parts, assembling all the recovery system with itself and with the rest of the rocket. In the chapter 5, the calculations concerning the flight mechanics, the strength analysis and the aerodynamics has been made. The parachutes sizes, masses and volumes, as well as the forces and the stresses occurring in the system elements during the parachutes extraction and deployment has been calculated. In the chapter 6 are described the tests, that has been made to obtain reliable data about some of the recovery system elements. The strength of the parachute canopy material, the sewing of the bearing tapes and the parachute extraction mechanism has been experimentally verified.
