## Design of a mast-lifting assist device on an inland, cabin sailing yacht

#### Abstract

Engineering thesis entitled “Design of a mast-lifting assist device on an inland, cabin sailing yacht” raises the subject of mast lifting, which is one of the most demanding in terms of physical fitness of the crew. During the design process, the following software has been used: Siemens NX, Autodesk AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB and Microsoft Office. The device is dedicated to a TES 678 BT yacht model, build by TES YACHT shipyard and designed by Tomasz Siwik. In the following chapters each step of the design process has been listed and characterised, in chronological order. The purpose of the first chapter of the thesis is to introduce the reader to the subject of yachting and present the basics of rigging and the connected vocabulary. Additionally, devices already in production are presented and the design intent are stated. Chapter two consists of the physical model of the rigging, along with the assumptions and simplifications allowing to use the model. Basic technical specifications of the yacht are described, as well as geometrical parameters of the rigging. Angles and lengths required in the following design steps’ calculations are named. The third chapter is dedicated to statics of the physical model of the rigging. Equilibrium equations are stated for each free body in the model. As a result, the force applied to the designed device is assigned in relation to a distance change between two components on the deck. That force to elongation relation is exactly the characteristics required from the spring used in the device. Chapter four presents the evolution of the design and shortly describes the final concept. Chapter five is dedicated to the process of spring selection. The method of selection is described, along with reasons for adding a second spring to the design. Requirements in terms of spring parameters are stated, the choice of correct steel is described. Additionally, the calculations relating to tensions in the springs and their strength are done. Ultimately, the characteristics of both springs have been described. The purpose of chapter six is to present the final device design. Each element is shown and described, as well as their installation inside the yacht. Necessary calculations in terms of loads on the mountings have been conducted. Chapter seven is a conclusion, which summarises the results, stresses the points where calculations inaccuracy has to be taken into account and states the methods to minimalize them. The possibilities for further design development is considered.
