## Analysis of the grain size waxes extracted from the powder HDPE from centrifuge effluent on the Hostalen installation

#### Abstract

A by-product in the production of polyethylene, both high and low density are waxes which are excreted in the main product. Polyethylene waxes undergo modifications have been applied in various industries. Therefore, the knowledge of their size, structure and properties is very important. The aim of the study was to compare the size of grains of waxes obtained from three types of powders of high density polyethylene. Powders deposited wax derived from centrifuge effluent from the Hostalen installation. The raw materials used in this work were waxes separated from the powder found in the effluent of industrial centrifuges. The effluent samples were collected during the production of the following types of HDPE: ACP 9240 Plus, 5831 D ACP and ACP 9240 PLUS Hostalen installation at Basell Orlen Polyolefins Sp. z o. o. The scope of this work encompassed theoretical and studial parts. In the theoretical part presents the classification and properties of waxes obtained from high density polyethylene. Next, the method of waxes preparation was showed. Describes the use of polyethylene waxes in the industry. Characterized microscopic methods of polymer analysis, such as optical microscopy, electron, atomic force, and a confocal. In the studial part presented the assumptions for the studies and characteristics of the raw materials from which separated waxes. The measurement results are summarized in the form of tables on the basis of which the comparative analysis of the following parameters grains: area, perimeter, minimum and maximum diameter. Based on the results of assays prepared charts showing the distribution of the grains in various measuring ranges. Analysis of the results showed that all waxes have many small grains (43 - 51%) ranging from 0.01 to 1.99 μm2. Wax from ACP 9255 PLUS is the only one not owned grain with an area of more than 3000 μm2. The wax obtained from the ACP 9240 PLUS grains observed with the largest area in the range of 50000.00 to 79999.99 μm2. The analysis made for the circuit grains showed that the waxes obtained from the ACP 5831 D and ACP 9240 PLUS have more grains with a small circumference (from 2.00 to 4.99 microns) compared to the wax obtained from the ACP 9255 PLUS. In these waxes obtained from the ACP 5831 D and ACP 9240 PLUS grains observed with the largest circumference (from 2000.00 to 19999.99 μm). In the case of the minimum diameter similar to the circuit comparative analysis showed that the wax obtained from the ACP 9240 PLUS had in comparison with other waxes less of particles of very small minimum diameter (from 0.01 to 0.99 microns). Grains of the wax did not reach such large diameters as waxes minimum of ACP 5831 D and ACP 9240 PLUS. Analysis of the minimum diameter in the case of wax with ACP 5831 D and ACP 9240 PLUS demonstrated that the largest grains in the range of 200.00 to 999.99 μm. Analysis of the results of measurements of the maximum particle diameter of wax showed that wax from ACP 9255 PLUS have at least particles of small diameter (from 1.00 to 1.59 microns). All tested waxes while the grains have a measuring range from 200.00 to 999.99 μm. Grains wax from ACP 9255 PLUS characterized by a smaller surface than grains of waxes from ACP 5831 D and ACP 9240 PLUS. It translates into other measurement parameters (circumference, diameter minimum and maximum) where waxes with ACP 5831 D and ACP 9240 PLUS reached in the early periods of higher percentages. Wax with ACP 9240 PLUS had the largest grain of the respondents waxes. In summary, based on the analysis of particle size of the wax separated from the three types of high density polymers from the centrifuge effluent industrial from installation Hostalen it found that the particle size of the waxes depends on the type of polyethylene.
