## Study of paragliding variometer with an integrated GPS receiver

### Kamil Kowalczyk

#### Abstract

The subject for a present graduate work is creating and structure of paragliding variometer that is equipped in its system with integrated GPS receiver. This project assumes not only hardware and programming element realization, but also is supposed to pose a deliberate base for onwards construction’s development. The first part of this work is strictly concerned with some theoretical aspects. It was enunciated what exactly variometer is and what is its meaning in paragliding flights. What is more, some additional opportunities and usages that goes from the variometer’s integration with an GPS receiver were emphasized. In subsequent chapter some professional devices accessible on a current market were described. They were split up into several categories subject to technological content of construction and their held functions. In this chapter were indicated opportunities and restrictions both the simplest sonic variometers, and the most elaborated that possess midst their functions some inbuilt map’s service, which are displayed on big, colorful screens. The follow-up part presents lots of requirements which are being put on designed device. All hardware premises were characterized, out of which the most significant is a choice of method how to select information on vertical rate, that is based on measured static pressure differentiation. In following part some chosen system’s elements were described and portrayed the schemes connections. Besides, it indicates an overall delineation of microcontroller software. For measurement was used an electronical barometer Bosch BMP180. Entire system is navigated with an efficient 32 bitwise microcontroller out of STM32L1 group. The GPS receiver that was used is Quectel L86, which enables both GPS and GLONASS over. Indicated device possesses a monochromatic graphic display with 2,7’’ diagonal and screen resolution 128x64 pixels. The display is regulated by device drived which is inserted in the screen’s glass. In this apparatus is also mounted an electromagnetic buzzer, that makes sounds with appropriate frequencies based on current speed. What is more, the connector for micoSD memory card was added, that allows to save the fly past route and different coveted parameters which are measured by this tool. By permitting the following enlargement also in hardware respect, in printed circuit exist two connectors, which allow to connect the external system’s elements using SPI, I2C i USART interfaces. Presented device is boosted with two AA batteries , which consumption can be watched over by microcontroller. The last phase of this graduate work is to put forward some tests of this device based on accuracy rating for variometer and GPS receiver and discuss all conclusions that were formed.
