## Experimental stand adaptation and testing of hydrophobic smooth surfaces in negative temperatures

#### Abstract

Current work deals with the problem of water droplets impacting hydrophobic smooth surfaces in negative temperature. Its aim was to adapt the experimental stand for testing of surfaces in conditions conductive to icing and to test several selected hydrophobic surfaces in negative temperature. These tests could be carried out with use of chamber containing cooling system capable of reducing temperature of sample and of experimental environment. The event of droplet impacting surface was recorded with use of two cameras: fast and thermographic. Cameras were triggered automatically with use of the drop detection system. In the first stage, author performed tasks resulting in improving and starting of the experimental stand. For this purpose there were made: a review and repair of the climatic chamber cooling system; construction of a new droplet generator; reparation and improvement of droplet detection system; fast camera mount redesign and fitting three axis mount for thermographic camera. Apart from the above some other actions were taken. The next step was to test surfaces of different physical and chemical properties. Tests were carried out in a temperature range from -10 to 23 Celsius degrees. In tests experimental environment was not cooled, and its temperature was equal to ambient temperature (23 Celsius degrees). Described test stand being the center of the present work was built by Remer [6] and its idea derives from the work Bobiński [1]. A few studies that discuss the problem of freezing drops were carried out on this test stand, but its technical condition negatively affected the quality of research. The result of the present work is the creation of a professional tool for further research on the issue of droplet freezing.
