Conceptual design of a vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aeral vehicle

Abstract

This thesis concerns the project of a conceptual vertical takeoff and landing UAV. The plane was to have similar specifications to a typical FVP platform. It’s main task is to patrol areas where conventional starts are impossible, woodland, urbanized areas etc. The first stage of the project was choosing an adequate layout of the propulsion system which would allow for vertical start and landing as well as standard flight. The first idea put forward was to use the same engines for takeoff, landing and flight. During the analysys of this layout many negative aspects of it were discovered, which resulted in the proposition of a new layout. This one also turned out to be invalid due to the ineffectivity of the engines during two different flight phases. Therefore a system using separate engines for vertical and horizontal flight was decided upon. The next stage was choosing the correct engines for the propulsion system. Deciding upon the correct engine for horizontal flight involved choosing the right engine and propeller. Electing the correct propulsion system for vertical flight was not that simple. Firstly helicopter rotors were suggested used regularly in multicopters, however due to their large size this idea was discarded. Secondly using electric ducted fan (EDF) was proposed. Due to a limited amount of vailable an experiment was carried out to confirm the analytical calculations, which were made before. Unfortunately due to the poor quality of the components the results were not as expected. Despite this, this type of engine was chosen for further analysis. The last stage of the project was to suggest the airframe and calculate the basic aerodynamic characteristics. A flying wing aircraft layout was proposed due to the easy integration of the propulsion system for vertical flight with the rest of the plane. The XFLR5 program was used for calculations. Furthermore correction coefficients taking under account the imprecision of the chosen method and the effects of EDF on the airflow were used. In conclusion in this thesis a concept of a vertical start and landing UAV vehicle was developed. Many versions solutions were analyzed and the most promising one was chosen. The analyses, calculations and experiments performed give a platform to further develop this concept.
