## Analysis of the profitability of using energy storage solution in the city electric buses charging infrastructure

### Krzysztof Szymański

#### Abstract

This study describes the project of electrification one of the Warsaw bus lines. The main purpose of this these was to project an optimal strategy of utilization an electric vehicle. It was possible due to use of smart fast charging stations. The first stage was to wide overview of modern solutions and technologies used in different areas of business. Very important was data about technology in electric buses, batteries and energy consumption. Moreover, the ways of energy supply to traction batteries were also investigated. Based on the collected information and on data obtained from Miejskie Zakłady Autobusowe Sp. z o.o. a model of functioning of city buses line 105 was built. The implementation of this model in the MATLAB simulation program allowed to obtain the values used in planning the strategy of charging these vehicles. A large part of energy supply strategy description is dedicated to the issue of the queue of buses waiting for charging at the end stop. Investigated solution is an algorithm that gives priority to the individual buses for recharging in the indicated chargers. The algorithm is based on: an information about state of charge of traction batteries, forecasting energy consumption to next charging and remaining time to the end of charging (with the traffic factor). Based on the algorithm designed was the MATLAB simulation that describes how the 105-bus line fast chargers works. Moreover, based on the simulation data the impact of designed charging infrastructure on the electricity grid has been estimated. The last stage was to simulate use of energy storage solution in high power charging stations. The installation of energy storage solution allowed to reduce the power of electric grid connection and to establish lower level of current flow. The conclusion of this these can point out the information about exploitation parameters of controlled, smart charging infrastructure in real case. Additionally, this study contains the simple exploitation cost comparation of charging infrastructure with installed battery storage solution and without. Based on this comparation there is possible to analysis of the profitability of using energy storage solution in the city electric buses charging infrastructure.
