## Analysis of the performance of an IGCC installation equipped with an entrained-flow gasifier in three configurations of heat recovery steam generator

#### Abstract

European Union attempts to reduce the emission to the atmosphere substances known as harmful such as sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides or carbon dioxide in member-countries. Due to the unpredictability of CO2 emission permit prices, one can note that Poland, as practically coal-monocultural country, should be in search of alternative sources for electricity or heat. The paper deals with the analysis of the performance of an IGCC installation equipped with an entrained-flow gasifier in three configurations of heat recovery steam generator. In section 2.1 basic information about gas turbines - the principle of their operation and parameters affecting their performance – have been gathered. In Section 2.2 information on the types of gasification reactors and processes contemporarily used, chemical reactions for a typical case of coal gasification and gasification parameters of selected systems are displayed. Chapter 3 contains assumptions and simplifications used during the construction of computational models using HYSYS 3.2 software. In the section 4.1 a diagram of the analyzed gasification plant and the parameters of its crucial points, as well as the scheme of the auxiliary steam unit using waste heat from cooling the synthesis gas for drying coal and electricity production, is displayed. In subsections sequentially 4.1.1, 4.1.2 and 4.1.3 the performance of steam part of the combined cycle for variants of the waste heat boiler respectively: single pressure without additional modifications, double pressure with series-parallel arrangement of heat exchangers including reheating and triple pressure with series-parallel arrangement of heat exchangers including reheating are presented. In each of the above sections the starting assumptions necessary for the construction of a specific model, and the balance equations of the individual heat exchangers are displayed. The parameter values of the working medium are presented separately for each case in the form of a table. Enthalpy of steam and water was calculated using the Podreczny Pakiet Inzyniera Energetyka application. Each model of the steam includes the calculated internal power and efficiency and electrical power and efficiency net and gross. The course of heat exchange in a waste heat boiler for each of the three analyzed configuration shown in graphs. Section 4.1.4 provides a summary of the performance of the analyzed combined cycle plants and their comparison with a short comment . Chapter 5 provides a summary of the paper. IGCC plant equipped with entrained-flow gasifier reaches high efficiency values in comparison to conventional power plants using coal as fuel. The highest efficiency value is achieved by the most complicated one – with the triple pressure with series-parallel arrangement of heat exchangers including reheating heat recovery steam generator. Gross electrical efficiency of such solution is equal to 50.67%. A simpler double pressure heat recovery steam generator reaches 49.88% gross electrical efficiency, and the simplest, single pressure one, 47.7%.
