## Study of flow phenomena in radial inflow turbines with vaneless volute distributor

#### Abstract

An analysis concerning fluid dynamics phenomena that take place in the radial inflow turbine with vaneless distributor was carried out in the following thesis and influence of geometrical parameters change at the turbine inlet on the turbine shaft power value was also investigated. For this purpose a 3D Solid Works model of the turbine stage was used. CFD simulations were carried out using Flow Simulation software and to calculate turbine power shaft the set of equations was used. Theoretical part describes areas of applications for the radial inflow turbines, starting from ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) and ending with turbocharging systems in internal combustion engines. In the design part, the radial inflow turbine 3D model was introduced and simulation soft was also reviewed. The simulations were done for two turbines housing models differing in the length of the section where accelerated fluid reaches the highest speed. Air and exhaust gases were used as a working fluid. Air has already been available in SolidWorks database, whereas exhaust gases were specially defined in the current study. This definition was described as well as the boundary conditions that were set for both models to receive greater accuracy were presented. The research and calculation part contain the simulations results. For each model the same analysis type was carried out using air and exhaust gases as working fluids. Obtained parameters were compared and conclusions were drawn when taking into consideration the affection of applied modification in turbine housing depending on working fluid characteristics. Those results were used to calculate the power on the turbine shaft (based on available knowledge about fluid dynamics) for each model with air and exhaust gases. All the results were presented as 3D flow trajectories, tables and charts. A suggestion on further development of the current work was also given at the end of the thesis.
