## Design of steer-by-wire steering column in a L7E-CP category vehicle

#### Abstract

The purpose of the work was to construct a steer-by-wire steering column prepared according to the requirements of the L7e-CP vehicle category. At the beginning of the work, it was explained why steer-by-wire is considered to be an important technology in the future of cars. The main assumptions of the designed steering column are described. The next chapter describes the construction of a conventional steering system with particular attention to the steering column and the electrical power steering system. The principle of operation and the main advantages of fly-by-wire systems from which steer-by-wire is derived have been described. The requirements of the L7e-CP category of vehicles are presented and the steer-by-wire system already introduced for use in the automotive industry is described. At the beginning of the construction process, drawings describing the individual elements of the designed column were presented. Next, the requirements concerning the construction, safety factor for stresses, operating principle, safety and forces generated on the shaft of the designed mechanism are presented. The steering wheel angle sensor and the torque torsion exerted in the steering shaft axis were chosen from the automotive industry. For safety reasons, the steering wheel angle reading has been doubled with an encoder. Due to the type of sensor used, installed in series in the column drive transmission system, the construction system was chosen with a steering wheel simulation system installed directly to the sensor shaft. The method of planned shafts connections was described and the steering shaft was selected from a passenger car. Then, analytical calculations of the transmission system were carried out and a BLDC electric motor and a worm gear reducer were selected. Transmissions output shaft was designed, analytical strength of the groove was calculated. Next, the finite element analysis of the drive transmission system was performed, charging the system with the forces obtained from the L7e-CP category homologation. A force of 150N was applied tangentially to the outer diameter of the steering wheel. Stresses occurring in the transmission output shaft were checked. The reactions obtained on the bearings were used to select the bearings of the column shafts. Next, the steering column housing was designed, the process of making the appropriate modules was described and subjected to FEM analysis. The system was loaded with reaction forces on bearings, torque generated by the engine and the mass of the engine and transmission.
