## The influence of the method of iron powder production on the properties and the manufacturing process of machine parts

#### Abstract

The thesis contains informations on the metallurgy of iron powders, briefly presents methods of the production of iron powders, their properties and application. Additionally, it cursorily describes the process of manufacturing machine parts according to the technology of sintered powders, with a detailed description of the key operations, compacting and sintering. In the next part of the thesis the influence of the method of iron powder production on the properties and the manufacturing process of machine parts was investigated. For this purpose, the production process of the products was ran twice, using two different iron powders that were produced by two different methods. Two powders were selected for the tests, the first NC 100.24 is produced using method of iron reduction with coal, the second ABC 100.30 is obtained by the method of water atomising. The production process consisted of mixing, sintering and oxidation operations. In order to carry it out, the components of the material mixture, the setting parameters of presses and furnaces were selected. The tests were performetd out at each production stage. Before the blends were made, the shape of the grains was observed using a scanning microscope, the sieve analysis was performed and the flowability and bulk density were measured. After the compacting operation, measurements of the density of the nonsintered parts, their compressive strength and measurements of geometric dimensions were carried out. After the sintering operation, a metallographic observation was made on the unetched cross-section of the compact using a metallographic microscope, after etching another observation was made using the scanning microscope. Furthermore microhardness, the distribution of elements, geometrical dimensions and density of sintered compacts were investigated. After the oxidation operation, the microstructure, geometrical dimensions, distribution of elements and microhardness were re-examined. The tests showed differences in the production process, especially in the compacting operation. In the case of parts made of powder NC100.24 it was necessary to use higher pressure forcse and to increase the bulk chamber. Differences in the porosity distribution of parts (hence also in the density distribution), microhardness, geometrical dimensions of the parts made and their strength before sintering were noticed. The metallographic observation showed no phase differences, in both cases it was ferritic-perlitic.
