## Properties and possibilities of using waste sand generated during sewage disposal and wastewater treatment

#### Abstract

This paper concerns quality testing of sand from the sewage treatment plant in Maszewo with a proposal to reuse this waste. The aim of this study was to perform preliminary research in order to determine the basic features and properties of the tested material, as well as its classification, the conducted research was the basis for analysis of the possibility of reuse of this waste. Four types of sand were collected for research. Three samples are sand from sewer cleaning that has been rinsed in a specialist rinsing facility. One of the three samples is sand from 2018 and the other two samples are materials from 2019 with different degrees of hydration. The sand produced in the mechanical wastewater treatment process, in devices called sand traps, was also studied. The paper was divided into two parts: research and study. The first part of research included an analysis of legal regulations and a review of literature on waste management in sewage treatment plants. National and EU legislation on environmental protection rules related to waste management (landfilling and reuse) was discussed. The review of literature data referred mainly to the characteristics of combined sewerage, rainwater sewerage, sewage treatment plants and sand traps. This part also presents the characteristics of waste generated in sewage treatment plants, with particular emphasis on sand. The study part included tests and analysis covering a number of indicators enabling characteristics and classification of tested material. The collected material was briefly characterized. The scope of studies was presented, which included many indicators. Obtained results show significant differences between sand from sand traps and sand from sewer cleaning. Sand from sewer cleaning after rinsing is pure waste, which deserves to be reclassified from waste to mineral that could be used as a trace of the Tychy-Urbanowice Sewage Treatment Plant, e.g. as a ballast for renovation works at the sewage treatment plant, which would significantly improve the economic aspects of the plant.
