## Application and verification of simplified model for dimensioning of perpetual pavement structure

### Karolina Surowiec

#### Abstract

The subject of the thesis is dimensioning of perpetual pavement structure using simplified model of the three-layer composite plate reduced to a layered beam and verification of the results based on a three-dimensional model of the layered structure resting on elastic half-space. Simplified model procedure consists of two stages for predicting of thickness and stiffness of the asphalt pavement layers. In the first stage the overall stiffness of the layers is estimated by using the spatial model of the layered half- space in the state of axial symmetry of loading. As a result, stiffness is selected on the basis of the condition that limits extreme vertical strains located at the top of the soil substrate in the axis of applied load. It is necessary to provide some material and geometrical parameters, so that the thickness of the layers can be calculated using closed-form mathematical formulas. Assuming equal Poisson's ratios for the materials, of which the layers are made and limiting the analysis to the critical sections, it is possible to apply the second stage of analysis and reduce the model to layered beams where each layer is characterised by a different thickness and stiffness. This procedure ensures that the thickness and stiffness of the layers are calculated properly. In order to validate the correctness of the simplified model predictions, the structure dimensioned in this way to be a long-lasting pavement structure has been verified using more precise computational model of the layered elastic half-space. It is the problem of searching crucial values of (governing) strains or stresses in the road pavement. In the solid model, in order to achieve a solution the stress function method is applied, which reduces the problem to the numerical integration of functions containing special functions. Verifications that have been conducted confirm the effectiveness of the simplified method, which conservatively predicts the required thickness and stiffness of asphalt layers in a long - life pavement structure.
