## Development of imaging software using Verasonics ultrasonograph

#### Abstract

The subject of my dissertation was the development of imaging software using Verasonics ultrasonograph. The purpose of this study was to become acquainted with ultrasound imaging. The user of the Verasonic ultrasonograph has the opportunity to set any attributes which define how the ultarsonograph works. This option is not available in the devices used in clinical practice. However the main aim was the elaboration and implementation scripts which control the way of work: transceiver schemes, image reconstruction and the control of the events. In the second chapter the main facts are included which were described in the literature. Equally important was making acquaintance with the documentation of the Verasonic ultrasonograph’s programming methods. The functions that enabled visualization of ultrasonic echoes and were accessible in the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences were analyzed. In the third chapter was the crucial part of study which was the implementation of the new functions in MATLAB®. The first of them was the function which is responsible for transmission of converging beam by the group of transmitters of transducer. The number of active transmitters was incremented by one (moving next) in every transmission. Every transmission was ended by received echoes and image reconstruction. The final image consists of single lines from every reconstruction. These lines were placed under the middle transmitter of active group which were used to transmit beam. Algorithm of the second implementation pertained a plane wave which is transmitted by using different number of angles. The image was reconstructed on the basis of each transmission with the technique of synthetic aperture. This function was extended to the option of transmission ultrasonic beam at the random angles. In the fourth chapter there was a report from the verification if the code’s implementation is correct. The evaluation was based on measurements made on physical phantoms. The geometry of the phantom’s image was compared to the nominal measurements which were published by the producer. The last part was the analysis of the ultrasonic images quality for different transceiver schemes. This was presented by the following parameters – mean squared error, root mean square error, signal-to-noise ratio, peak signal-to-noise ratio, universal image quality index, structural similarity index. The final result of study was elaboration of the procedures controlling the ultrasonograph which allows the analysis of the transceiver schemes influence on ultrasonic images quality.
