## Methods of microbiological air quality assessment in office environment

#### Abstract

Presently architecture in big cities tends to build up more office buildings. It results in increased number of workers functioning in office environment being exposed to the threats related to the poor indoor air quality. The main aim of this research was to compare the commonly used methods of the air quality assessment: one stage MAS impactor, six-stage Andersen impactor, button personal inhalable filter sampler and BioSampler impinger, from the point of view of their applicability in quantitative and qualitative analysis of microbiological air contamination. The research was accomplished in one of the office buildings in Warsaw. The research revealed that: • MAS impactor, although easy and quick in use, is not able to detect all potential threats. • Andersen impactor is very useful because of it is ability to determine a size distribution which represents level of exposure of respiratory system and is able to detect more groups of microorganisms. However, similarly to MAS, part of bioaerosol may deflect and will not be detected. Moreover differences between results obtained by this impactor are statistically significant. • Button sampler is the best in detection of microorganisms, filtration technique allows to collect most of particles of microorganisms. It represents the most accurately the contamination to which the worker is exposed. In this method both viable and non viable microorganisms can be detected. • BioSampler, similarly to the Button sampler, has better ability to catch microorganism into the medium which is easy to dilute, giving the possibility to detect a total number of microorganisms in the air. Statistical analysis confirmed that BioSampler is able to detect more culturable microorganisms than any other investigated device. • Each of the tested sampling methods has some advantages and disadvantages. In this study it has been shown that each method should be fitted to given conditions.
