## Technical and economic analysis of process heat supplies from the Warsaw District Heating Network

#### Abstract

The aim of the analysis made, was to study the possibility of increasing demand of district heating for process purposes, in particular in terms of the chance of increasing heating load in summer. The paper reviews the current forms of heat use in technological installations and their chance for development. Technical and economic analysis of the possibility of introducing the production of cold from system heat was presented as well. The basic element of the work is the analysis of the impact of the introduction of trigeneration on the parameters of district heating network operation and the possibility of increasing the stream of network water in regions with cold and the whole WSC. In the first stage, the author focused on the presentation of the characteristics of steam and heating water consumption for process purposes at currently connected customers to the Warsaw District Heating Network. Large-area buildings have the largest share of process heat consumption. These customers use this heat for heating purposes in ventilation and air-conditioning systems. In the coming years no significant increase in this demand is expected. Moreover, there is a reduction in the consumption of process steam, which transmission generates significant losses. The main element of the presented thesis is the analysis of the impact of trigeneration on the parameters of district heating network operation. At the beginning a review of technologies available on the market, allowing to use system heat for the production of cold, was carried out. Then, due to the confirmation of commercial use, the technology of absorption chillers was selected for further analysis. Characteristics of heat receptions for supplying cooling units were used to simulate the operation of the network in the Termis program. The methodology of calculations, simplifications and assumptions were described in detail. The simulation was performed in two variants. The first one simulated the impact of the development of the cooling market on the operation of the Warsaw District Heating Network, assuming a constant network water temperature during the summer period (78ﹾC). The second one included the study of the influence of the increase in the temperature of cooling units’ feedwater, on the condition of heating network. The last part of the paper contains an analysis of the economic efficiency of absorption technology. Results of the economic analysis determine the unit costs of cold production, taking into account the system costs/system effects in the district heating network and heat and power plants (CHP). The approximate price of cold at which the investment in absorption technology for the production of cold from network heat is acceptable was presented as well in this paper.
