The influence of direct georeference on 3D modelling of a terrestrial object

Abstract

This thesis aims to explore the possible uses of direct georeferencing in the process of creating 3D models of buildings from ground based digital images. The influence of a priori measurement error of linear elements of exterior orientation, which served as observation weights, on the accuracy of generated products was researched. The experiment was conducted with the use of two different software: Agisoft PhotoScan Professional Edition and Pix4Dmapper Pro. The theoretical part includes the description of the issues directly linked with the use of direct georeferencing in photogrammetry, the concept of internal and external orientation, the principle of creating three dimensional models from digital pictures and the description of the software that was employed. The practical part encompasses the methods that were used for compiling, processing and analyzing the data with each of the abovementioned software. For the purpose of the 3D model creation the digital pictures of Warsaw University’s of Technology Main Hall were used. The tacheometer was employed to measure the coordinates of the camera for each of the images that were taken and on that basis the spatial data for aerotriangulation was obtained. Spatial oriented observations were weighted by applying eight variable a priori precisions of linear elements of external orientation measurement and were analyzed as separate projects. The test field located in the Main Hall was used as the points of reference. The comparison of the coordinates obtained from the direct georeferencing with the known photopoints allowed the extraction of the best and the worst results for the applied weights. For the purpose of the experiment a more thorough analysis was only conducted for the most extreme results. The conducted research was focused on the dense clouds and generated 3D models. These were further worked on in the CloudCompare software, which allowed a more comprehensive analysis of their precision. The achieved results were compared with regard to the software used and their usefulness in 3D modelling of architectural objects. The activities that could help to optimize the results were also considered On the basis of the conducted experiment it can be concluded that direct georeferencing allows creating three dimensional models that are within the accepted error range of commonly acknowledged guidelines for architectural objects.
