## The influence of heat treatment on the structure and properties of surface layers produced by nickel and chrome electroplating on aluminium alloy 6060

#### Abstract

Due to its low density, high strength and good corrosion resistance, aluminium alloys are used in many branches of industry, such as, automotive or aerospace. To improve surface properties of these materials, various surface engineering techniques are used. Recently, there has been a growing interest among researchers in the intermetallic phases produced on aluminum alloys. Some of the most frequently studied are phases from the Al-Ni system, which are characterized by good strength properties and high chemical resistance at elevated temperatures. This paper presents the results of the study on the influence of heat treatments on layers produced by nickel and chrome electrochemical plating on aluminium alloy 6060 on their structure and properties. The layers produced with different times of heat treatment were analyzed on the basis of nickel coatings of various thicknesses (2 and 4m). In order to examine the structure of produced layers and coatings, microscopic observations were carried out using a light and SEM microscopes. EDS detector was used to investigate their chemical composition. Microhardness, adhesion and wear resistance of the produced layers were also tested. On the basis of the conducted research it was found that: • for the applied heat treatment parameters, it is possible to create Al3Ni2 and Al3Ni2 intermetallic phases, however, no layers containing chromium were formed, • the thickness of the chromium coating applied was too small to observe its influence on the properties of the tested samples, • the majority of the heat treatments applied did not lead to an increase of wear resistance of the tested alloy, except for 90 minutes heating of the sample with the nickel coating of 2m thickness.
