## Design of the fuselage of 3D printed UAV PW-WAŻKA

### Melania Maria Kulczycka

#### Abstract

The aim of the thesis “Design of the fuselage of 3D printed UAV PW-Ważka” was to design the unmanned aerial vehicle and to prove that 3D printing can be used as a method of creating the aircraft. In the thesis, the filament, the material used for printing, will be examined carefully as an aviation material. The thesis will consider only the fuselage design. The process of the design started with defined the geometry of UAV and its goal. The wings and empennage are to be interchangeable and they represent a one of three sets. The main task of the aircraft depends on the certain set. However, the fuselage has to be universal. The aircraft was decided to have semi-monocoque structure, so the fuselage construction consists of skin, frames and longerons. Also, the aircraft is not equipped with the landing gear. In this step, the mass center was shallowly calculated as well. The further chapter analysis the choice of the filament and after considering advantages and disadvantages it was decided to be ABS – one of thermoplastic materials. There were no choice of the 3D printer, but the issue of their types was briefly raised. Zortrax M200, the printer used in this project, uses the technology of fused deposition modeling, which is based on creating the model by continuous distribution filament layer by layer. The direction of printing was profoundly examined. The factors that were taken into consideration were the loads acting on the fuselage, the accuracy of the printout, the linchpins and their removal and minimizing the drag. Finally, all of the parts were considered separately and appropriate adjustment of the model on printer was set. In the next chapter, the detailed design was shown. The method of engine and accumulator fastening was described as a front part of the fuselage. The solution of spars connection and transferring the loads from the wing is presented as a middle part. The connection of the tail with the fuselage is discussed in the closing part. In addition the closing flap with the air outlets was mentioned and described. Part division was in majority determined by the frames. Two neighboring parts will be glued together. During the project two iterations were done. Both of the iterations were analyzed in ANSYS. First one for the initial dimensions of the fuselage and the second one after thinning the skin, longerons and frames. The structural analysis examined the forces and the moments acting on the fuselage. At the end we may see the example results of the model printouts. They show how the final effect is influenced by the factor of complexity. The project is still developing and further iterations and improvements will be done.
