## The analysis of the "Regular" class unmanned airplane for SAE AeroDesign 2008 competition

### Dawid Mleczko

#### Abstract

This B.Sc. thesis describes the design process of aircraft taking part in SAE AeroDesign 2008 competitions, which take place in the U.S. and Brazil every year. The competitions are divided into two parts. In first part team had to "sell" their product during 10 minutes presentation. Second part of competition is more practical. Teams have to prove that their designed aircraft really deserves to be called the winner. In practical part, aircraft has to lift as heavy payload as possible. This is very difficult task, because airplanes have to be designed based on structural constraints imposed by the rules, which are changing from year to year. The first part of this B.Sc. thesis is devoted to analysis competition Rules and analysis of aircraft which took part in past competitions. The most important part of this chapter was to choice the optimal configuration (monoplane or biplane). The next step was to determine main dimensions of aircraft (length, span and height). The wing area was set based on analysis of wings with different areas using the AVL program, which is based on a vortex lattice method. In the second part of this thesis, a method of aerodynamic optimization of the wing was outlined. At the beginning it was described how the planform of the wing was chosen. One hundred seventy three planeforms were analyzed with the same area, and then planform which generates the least induced drag was selected. The next step was to optimize wing airfoils. Optimization was performed using the package for analysis and optimization of two-dimensional airfoils – MSES. The XFoil program was used to for final inverse design and analysis of two-dimensional aerodynamics characteristics. The next step was winglet designing. The optimum load distribution on winglet was easily found applying Munk’s Bachelor of Science Thesis – Abstract theorem. In the next step the winglet airfoils were designed. In order to avoid negative interference effect between wing and winglets, threedimensional numerical optimization was applied using KK-AERO software package. Next part of this B.Sc. thesis deals with method of propeller designing. In addition, wind tunnel tests of manufactured propeller were described. In the next part of this thesis, the calculations of mechanics of flight were shown. The method of designing horizontal and vertical tail was announced. The spiral stability was checked. The analysis of takeoff was performed, longitudinal stability and steerability of aircraft were calculated, turn and phugoidal movements analysis was also described. Toward the end of that chapter the envelope of load factors were described. The load distribution at horizontal tail was calculated using PANUKL program, which is used to analyze three-dimensional solids using lower order panel methods (Hess method). Another part of the B.Sc. thesis deals with a methodology of designing beam and torque box. Designing was based on publication by Wiesław Stafiej " Obliczenia stosowane przy projektowaniu szybowców ". An next part technological process of making wing, winglets, horizontal tail and propellers were described. The last part of this thesis concerned performed flight tests with data logger and interpretation of results.
