Design of hot water heating system with a thermal capacity which is needed to make warm the residential space of 8000 m2 for 24 hours

Abstract

The study comprises the design of hot water heating system with a thermal capacity which is needed to make warm the residential space of 8000 m2 for 24 hours. The study focuses on the main element of the system, which is, a vertical cylindrical tank which accumulates the heat with water at 80°C. Such object is frequently referred to as a heat accumulator, and thermal storage tank or, less frequently, a buffer tank (first two terms have been used in the study). The required amount of water (77 cubic metres) which is able to accumulate specific amount of heat and the dimensions of the cylindrical element of the tank (8.75 metres high, with a diameter of 3.5 meters) have been determined on the parameter which is given in the subject. In the heat accumulator heat losses, which come from temperature difference between the inside and the surroundings as well as the phenomena caused by termal stratification, play a crucial role. In the tank strength calculations, the author determined the thickness of a cylindrical wall (10 mm), the thickness of stub pipes walls and hot and cold water pipes, outer jacket strengthening around bigger inlets, and the parameters of rods in the tank mounting flange. Structural strength of the tank was also tested for resistance against buckling and wind pressure during the determining of metal sheet thickness of outer jacket. The heat accumulator is equipped with flanges which ensure a laminar flow condition during loading and unloading of the tank. Two inspection hatches are used in the tank: in the lower part of the outer jacked and on the roof. The top hatch, is accessible by a ladder with a security basket and a platform with railings. The tank is also secured against possible changes of internal pressure by a breather valve. The lack of literature the subject of heat accumulators is the most problematic issue in the design process. The author has used literature that reports thin-walled steel structures and steel liquid storage tanks.
