## Preliminary design and analysis of the Formula SAE chain transmission

### Karol Igor Gortych

#### Abstract

The purpose of this work was to design a transmission system in the "Formula SAE" car and show the impact of the load on its individual components. The drive train is a set of components for transferring mechanical energy from the engine to the vehicle's road wheels. The presented system transfers torque from the Emrax electric motor to the rear wheels via a chain transmission. The construction of the system was dictated by the price and the simplicity of assembly and execution. In addition, a series of simulations were carried out in the work using the finite element method whose results were then combined with the results of theoretical calculations. The theoretical part contains general information about the "Formula SAE" cars, as well as the issues concerning drive transmissions. The second chapter presents the tools and methods used to perform the task presented in this work. The third chapter presents the construction of the electric motor "Emrax 208" and its strengths and weaknesses in relation to its use in the car of the SAE formula. The fourth chapter presents the construction issues with the division into gears and the drive shaft cooperating with it. This chapter also includes material data for individual elements. Using some simplifications, analytical calculations were made to check the strength of individual structural elements and the course of selection of transmission parameters was presented. the design process was supported by strength numerical analyzes that confirm the correctness of analytical calculations. The results of the conducted tests were appropriately interpreted and compared with the theoretical results.
