### Paulina Ziemkiewicz

#### Abstract

In the first chapter I presented the history of cooperative banking, whose development began in the 19th century and continues up to the modern times. Contributed to that many people, among others.: Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, the Righteous Pioneers from Rochdale, Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch, Franciszek Stefczyk, Hipolit Cegielski and Stanisław Staszic. These persons have distinguished themselves in their history of cooperative banking and could promote the Polish lands and continue to grow. For the development of cooperatives is very important also the adoption by the Polish government legislative authority on 29 October 1920, the law on cooperatives, which had an impact on the harmonisation of forms and rules of functioning of the credit cooperative, and also gave the new organisational base all cooperatives. Already in 1989, act 1662 cooperative banks, which employed 32 thousands of workers and unite more than 2.5 million members. And since 2001, began a new stage in the history of Polish cooperative banking, when it began to operate three cooperative groups: Spółdzielcza Grupa Bankowa, Bank Polskiej Spółdzielczości S.A. and Mazowiecki Bank Regionalny S.A. In the second chapter, I described the complexity of the banking system. In Poland the banking system consists of the Central Bank, which is the Polish National Bank and commercial banks, which are the lower level of the banking system. Polish National Bank meets the very many important functions, among others: is the Bank - the issuer of the Polish payments funds, the Bank for commercial banks and the Bank for The State. Tasks of Polish National Bank is suported by various institutions. These include the Bank Guarantee Fund and the Financial Supervisory Commission. One of the banks, that can be distinguished in the banking system, is a cooperative bank. He can work and provide their services throughout the country, state or county only. It shall specify the provisions of the banking law, the law on the functioning of the cooperative banks, their associations and associations of banks and the credit unions Act. In the third chapter, I described the functioning of cooperative banking on the example of the Cooperative Bank in Plonsk. This is a bank with a hundred year old tradition, that combines with modernity. His experience and involvement in both social activities and needs of the customers, makes the Bank constantly perfected and develops. An example of this is rising on October 1, 2014, a new branch of the Bank in Plock and customizing its products to the requirements of the customers. Both the growth of Cooperative Bank deposits in Plonsk, and volume of the loans has reached a higher level than in the whole of the banking sector. All this testifies to the competitiveness of the Bank, its development and the increasingly significant position in the provision of banking services. Ideal conditions and a wide product range of cooperative Bank in Plonsk will have an impact on the increase in the number of persons concerned. While the activities of the Bank in towns and villages will contribute to diversify and broaden the customer base.
