Analysis of the operation of the Warsaw District Heating network (WSC), including the new cogeneration system in ZTPOK-ZUO

Abstract

The energy sector is one of the most vital part of the national industry, so it is important to ensure the technological advancement in this field. Nowadays, the European Union aims to reduce usage of carbon as fuel as much as possible from the generation process. It is a huge problem for countries like Poland, where majority of the power plants are using carbon as a fuel. The solution to this situation is increasing a share of combined production of electricity and heat in our power generation system. This study focuses on the analysis of cogeneration in two ways: it presents macroscopic view on the most important information about this process and microscopic one. In cooperation and for the needs of Veolia Energia Warszawa, the economic viability of the cogeneration system in the expanded ZTPOK-ZUO and its impact on the operation of the Warsaw District Heating System were analysed. The first chapter describes a number of advantages of introducing new cogeneration entities into the National Power System. Additionally, the most important coefficients used to evaluate the efficiency of energy generation process were collected. Moreover, the most popular and currently used cogeneration technologies have been presented along with their general overview. The second chapter is the overview of the situation of cogeneration in Poland. It contains the most recent statistical data on combined heat and power entities installed in our country. It also describes the newest support system for cogeneration which will go into effect in 2019. At the end of this chapter, the most important Polish investments in combined heat and power systems, which have recently been commissioned or will be commissioned in the near future, were gathered. The third chapter contains the short description of the Warsaw District Heating System which has been analysed in this study. The following chapters are based on the modernization of the Warsaw’s waste incineration plant which is an example of a cogeneration entity. In the fourth chapter, a short economically analysis of this investment was carried out. Based on real data and essential assumptions, the potential economic viability of the investment has been demonstrated. In the fifth chapter the influence of development of ZTPOK-ZUO’s plant for pressure conditions in the Warsaw District Heating was examined. In order to carry the simulation of the district heating system operation in the Termis software, four days representative for different periods of year were selected (warm, cold and two mild days). For each day, two different variants of the simulation were prepared: first recreated real state of the system for the given day and second which included the increased heat power of the incineration plant. All carried simulation confirmed that through the modernization of this plant, improvement of pressure levels in both eastern and western part of Warsaw would have been achieved.
