## Thermodynamic decopmposition of hydrogen peroxide in satellite propulsion

### Brian Michael Kinyanjui Muthama

#### Abstract

Hydrogen peroxide, in a 60% by weight aqueous solution, was first used as an energy source for underground propulsion in the year 1934 in Germany. This led to its subsequent application in higher concentrations in the World War II for auxiliary propulsion as well as gas generation concepts in aircraft and rockets. Its application in these areas came up as a result of its thermal or catalytic initiated exothermic decomposition (with heat release) to yield a gaseous mixture of oxygen and superheated steam. Highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide is an energetic material that has been widely used in the rocket and space engineering. The use of hydrogen peroxide in the past was limited due to its questionable storage stability. Its water solution however can now be stored for extended periods without significant degradation. With improved stability, the applications of the compound have increased and currently it is used as the primary monopropellant in underwater propulsion, aerospace propulsion as well as in auxiliary power concepts. As a monopropellant in the airspace industry, its applications have been widespread in the area of station maintenance, space maneuvering, thrust vector control and power generation. In Operational bipropellant systems, its application has been limited to extremely high performance aircraft rockets. As a result of the above applications, the study of chemical kinetics in thermal decomposition of hydrogen peroxide is very important, which is the subject of this work. Various mechanisms prepared using Cantera software, have been used to come up with a program coded in Python that calculates the reaction course for hydrogen peroxide decomposition. Graphs describing how various parameters relate with each other have been prepared and the results compared with those obtained from experimental data. A preliminary introduction to the compound has also been done and as such, the work has covered topics such as the physical and chemical properties of hydrogen peroxide, its manufacture, general daily uses and its application in Mono and bi propellant systems.
