## Experimental and numerical research on the detonation in layered hydrogen – air mixtures

### Mariusz Twarowski

#### Abstract

This work is dedicated to the experimental research and numerical simulations of a detonative combustion in hydrogen – air mixtures, in layered configurations. The layered configuration used in this work consists of a vertical layer of combustible mixture, which is confined from top and bottom and two volumes of an inert gas (air) which surrounds the combustible mixture from the unconfined sides. The work is divided into six chapters. The first chapter contains basic information about detonative combustion. Basing on the literature, the basic theory, concepts, models and experimentally proven properties are described A short review of available tools for numerical analyses of detonation is presented in chapter 2. Particular emphasis is put on “ddtFoam” – a CFD code developed as a part of OpenFoam environment by Florian Ettner et al. (Munchen Technical Univeristy) in 2013. It is freely available under OpenSource license. It is also a main computational tool in this work. The third chapter presents results of an experimental study. The basic parameters of detonation front (maximum pressure and velocity) are investigated for various thicknesses of combustible mixture layer. Additionally, the minimum thickness necessary for a stable detonation propagation is determined. Research is performed on two mixtures – one with 29.6% of volumetric hydrogen concentration (stoichiometric) and the other with 40% (the concentrations stand only for the combustible layer). The results of numerical simulations are presented in chapter 4. The emphasis is put on achieving the best possible agreement with experiments. The results obtained from both studies are compared, and on this basis the accuracy of the numerical model used in “ddtFoam” is evaluated. Two last chapters contain a summary and references.
