## Economic analysis of SOFC-based systems

#### Abstract

In this thesis, an economic analysis of SOFC-based systems is presented depending on their power and application with natural gas as fuel. In the first part (chapters 1-4), the motivation, history of fuel cells, basics of their construction, operating principles, review of existing installations, state of technology and support mechanisms for energy facilities are presented. In Chapters 5-6, an economic analysis of SOFC-based fuel cell systems was conducted with respect to Polish market and current price of natural gas. The investment costs were based on three reports: the Battelle Memorial Institute report, Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Fuel Cells Hydrogen Joint Undertaking. Data from these reports were compared with each other and used separately to conduct an economic analysis for each of the considered types of systems. Operational costs were estimated using current price of natural gas, availability factor, approximate maintenance, installation and insurance costs. Electric and thermal efficiency of the systems was also taken into account. Revenues in the case of sales of electricity and heat to the grid were determined based on the regulations regarding price of heat from cogeneration units and the average price of electricity. The use of fuel cell systems to cover the user’s needs was also considered – the price of saved energy was adopted based on the price lists of electricity distributors, and the price of saved heat based on the average sale price of heat from coal-fired plants. The last part of thesis presents selected potential applications of SOFC-based systems with installed capacities considered in the economic analysis. It also outlines expected savings on a monthly scale in each case. Finally, summary of the work with several conclusions was made.
